In 2017 I decided to take a stab at writing a novel, so I started reading them again, after a fiction hiatus that was induced by reading several sub-par novels that received ecstatic reviews, National Book Awards, Pulitzer prizes, etc.
I started posting my reactions to the novels on a certain social network, and over time that morphed into a thing. I started trying to rank the novels I read, I suppose in an attempt to help me organize and retain what I'd read. I didn't want to read the books and then 5 years later forget almost everything about them. Shortly after the ranking exercise kicked off, I realized that it was inadequate, so I started rating them on a scale of 1 to 9 as well.
In time I came to look forward to the reviewing, ranking, and rating as much as the reading itself. I also thought it would be sad (sad) if all of those reactions to what I was reading just rotted on that particular social network's vine.
